Former Kerala CM Oommen Chandy passes away at 79

On the morning of July 18, a senior member of the Indian National Congress Oommen, Chandy who was receiving cancer treatment passed away in a hospital in Bengaluru.

Who was Oommen Chandy?

 

Oommen Chandy served as the Kerala chief minister twice – from2004-06 and 2011-16.

For more than 50 years, Oommen Chandy served as the Kottayam district’s representative for the Puthupally seat. He represented Puthupally as an MLA.

When Chandy was the president of the Youth Congress in 1970, he first represented Puthupally. In 1977, he was appointed to his first cabinet position under K Karunakaran. He received two appointments as Chief Minister. He had been in charge of the state’s financial portfolio. He had also served as the opposition leader.

Oommen Chandy’s wife Mariamma, children Maria Oommen, Chandy Oommen, and Achu Oommen are left to carry on his legacy.

From August 31, 2004, to May 12, he served as the Minister for the United Democratic Front (UDF) Ministry of Kerala, when the UDF was governed by the Congress.

Chandy had a long career in politics, serving as Labor Minister in the K. Karunakaran Ministry in 1977 and overseeing the same division in the A.K. Antony-led Ministry. From December 1981 until March 1982, he was the K. Karunakaran Cabinet’s Home Minister. In 1991, he also served as the UDF Ministry’s Finance portfolio holder.

Oommen Chandy was born at Karottu Vallakalil K.V.’s house in Kottayam. Through the Kerala Students Union (KSU) and the Youth Congress, he and Baby Chandy got involved in politics actively. he was became KSU,S president in 1965 and he is declared as a post of state president in 1967 St. George’s High School in Kottayam is where he finished his education. Chandy is a CMS College, Kottayam, S.B. graduate. S.B. College Changanassery, and Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram.

The Congress Kerala said Chandy was loved across generations and sections of the population.

The Congress family will miss his leadership and energy,” the Congress Kerala tweeted.

Oommen Chandy death news: Kerala declares holiday

The Kerala government has announced Tuesday as a public holiday and two days’ mourning as a mark of respect to the late former chief minister.

Indira Bhavan at Thiruvananthapuram is the Congress headquarters in Kerala. The body will be taken in a procession to Puthuppally on Wednesday morning. “We have made arrangements at the Thirunakkara Ground in Kottayam for the public to pay homage. In the evening, the body will be taken to his house at Puthuppally,” Satheesan said.

The funeral will be held at the Puthuppally church at 2pm on Thursday, he added.

The Kerala government has announced Tuesday as a public holiday and two days’ mourning as a mark of respect to the late former CM. According to Congress sources, Chandy died at a private hospital at 4.25 am while undergoing treatment for cancer.

The party has stated that Chandy’s mortal remains will be brought from Bengaluru to Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday afternoon. The leader of the opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly, Satishan, mentioned that the final rites will be conducted on Thursday afternoon at Puthuppally Church near Kottayam.

Addressing the media alongside other senior leaders, he further added that the mortal remains will be kept in the Durbar Hall of the State Secretariat on Tuesday for the public to pay their respects and offer condolences.
